Dual-Stage, Dual-Threshold Airbags (SRS)

The Dream: Safety for All Road Users

"It is an incomparable joy for an engineer to apply one's own ideas and create a product which contributes to humanity and society. Moreover, if the product is an excellent one and well received by society, the joy of the engineer is absolutely unparalleled. As one engineer, I exert all my efforts while always desiring to create such a product."
-Soichiro Honda

Our engineers spend countless hours creating ways to help protect people. Our motivation stems from our desire to enhance the safety of the occupants of our vehicles in case a collision occurs. So we're both gratified and humbled to be an industry leader in creating airbag technology--including innovative advances such as dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags.

Two decades ago, in an effort to reduce the risk of injury, Honda introduced the world's first upwardly deploying front passenger airbag that inflates up towards the windshield before inflating back and toward the passenger. This design is now the industry standard. Now, dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags adjust the deployment force based on the severity of the crash. That means that in a moderate-to-severe frontal impact, both stages of the airbags can inflate simultaneously. But if a crash is determined to be less severe, the airbag inflators are designed to deploy separately to be more appropriate for the conditions. Plus, a separate dual-threshold logic may instruct the airbag to deploy in a less severe crash if the occupant is not wearing their seatbelt than if they are properly protected with a seatbelt.

Our Commitment
It truly is a company-wide commitment to continuously enhance the safety for everyone--drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other road users. That's why we dedicate so much time and energy developing new technologies. And that's why dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags* come standard on almost every passenger vehicle we sell.

*The dual-stage, dual-threshold system applies only to the front driver and front passenger airbags.
