At Honda, The Power of Dreams drives us to create intelligent products that enhance mobility and increase the joy in people’s lives. As part of this mission, we strive to build and maintain a relationship of trust with you. This Privacy Notice describes how American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (“American Honda”) collects, uses, and discloses your personal information. It also explains the rights you may have related to your personal information. It governs information we collect through our websites and mobile applications (collectively, “Sites”) and information we collect through any other means, including products and offline activities (collectively, “Services”). This Privacy Notice also applies to our parent company, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and other Honda companies when they process personal information about U.S. residents. The American Honda Vehicle Data Privacy Notice, and California Privacy Notice are part of this Notice.

This Privacy Notice does not apply to:

  • Personal information we collect from or about American Honda employees, job applicants, or independent contractors.
  • The privacy practices of American Honda Finance Corporation, American Honda Insurance Solutions, LLC, or Honda Aircraft Company, LLC.
  • Personal information we process as a service provider on behalf of third parties.

By accessing or using our Sites or Services, you agree to this Privacy Notice and our Terms and Conditions.

1. INFORMATION WE COLLECT

Personal Information

We collect information that personally identifies, relates to, describes, or is capable of being associated with you. We call this type of information “personal information”. The information we collect about you varies based on how you use the Sites or Services and your relationship with us. It may include

  • Identifiers such as name, social security number, driver’s license number, other government identification number, IP address, social media username, student identification information, and contact information such as address, email address, phone number, and fax number;
  • Characteristics  of protected classifications such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, and religion;
  • Demographic information such as marital status, the number and ages of children, and what languages you speak;
  • Commercial information such as vehicle or product characteristics and identification numbers, license plate numbers, vehicle registrations, purchase history, vehicle service history, product financing information, device troubleshooting history, data about your vehicle or product’s operation and your use of connected vehicle services and technologies (as further outlined in our Vehicle Data Privacy Notice), accident history, vehicle value, and financial information such as payment card information;
  • Internet or other electronic network activity information such as browsing and search history, your interactions with our emails, and data collected by cookies and similar technologies;
  • Geolocation data such as precise and non-precise geographic location indicators from mobile, web, and vehicles or products;
  • Audio, electronic, visual, or similar information such as call recordings, chat transcripts, testimonials and pictures or videos you upload to or send through the Sites or Services, and content captured by vehicle cameras (to the extent described in limited situations below);
  • Professional or employment-related information such as employer information, income, and occupation;
  • Education information such as education level;
  • Consents and preferences such as your cookie settings, marketing preferences, and opt-ins and opt-outs to other processing activities; and
  • Inferences drawn from other personal information or data that relate to your preferences, interests, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behavior, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes.

Some of the personal information listed above may be considered sensitive personal information under relevant privacy laws. Depending on your state of residence, this may include social security number, driver’s license and other government identification card information, race, ethnicity, religion, precise geolocation data, and your American Honda account login credentials.

If you complete a credit application, upload documents as part of a dealer transaction, or make a payment to a dealer through our Sites, we collect additional personal information and documents on behalf of the applicable dealer and its lending partners. We process this information as the dealer’s service provider.

Usage Data and Site Activity

We automatically collect information related to the actions you take on the Sites. We refer to this type of information as “usage data.” Usage data may include information about your device, browser, operating system, and your interactions with our Sites like your IP address, the pages you view, the page and search terms used to reach our Site, the time, date, and duration of your visit, and your clicks. If we can reasonably associate this data with you, we treat it as personal information under the categories of identifiers or internet or other electronic network activity information, as appropriate. If we cannot reasonably associate this information with you, we treat it as anonymous usage data. We may use and disclose anonymous usage data for any purpose, without restriction, to the extent permitted by law.

Communication Recordings

We may record calls and retain the content of emails, text messages, chat transcripts, and other written or electronic communications between you and us. By communicating with us, you consent to our recording and retention of communications.

Anonymized Data

We may anonymize, aggregate, or deidentify personal information such that we can no longer reasonably associate the data with an identifiable person. We refer to this type of data as “anonymized data” because it no longer qualifies as personal information. We may also receive anonymized data from third parties. We may use and disclose anonymized data for any purpose, without restriction, to the extent permitted by law. We will not knowingly attempt to reidentify the people originally associated with anonymized data.

2. HOW WE COLLECT INFORMATION

From You

We may ask you to provide personal information when you communicate with us. You are not required to provide this information; however, certain features of the Sites or Services may not be available unless you provide the requested information. We may also capture your contact information, such as phone numbers and email addresses, when you contact us.

From Dealerships

American Honda and its dealers are independently owned and operated legal entities with separate privacy policies and obligations. We may collect personal information from dealerships. For example, if you purchase or service a vehicle at a dealership, the dealership may share your personal information with us.

From Third-Party Data Sources

We may collect personal information from other third-party data sources such as marketing partners, data brokers, analytics firms, government agencies, third-party businesses that provide products or services to our customers, and affiliates not governed by this Privacy Notice

Cookies and Other Automated Tools

We and third parties may use cookies and other tracking or automated data collection tools. We refer to these tools collectively as “cookies”. We use cookies to collect personal information and usage data, track your interaction with our Sites and Services, improve the experience of the Sites and Services, and conduct cross-context behavioral or targeted advertising (collectively “targeted advertising”).

We may use the following types of cookies:

  • Strictly Necessary Cookies: These cookies are necessary for the Sites to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. The Sites usually set these in response to actions you take such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in, or filling in forms.
  • Functional Cookies: These cookies enable enhanced functionality and personalization on the Sites. If you do not allow these cookies, certain features or services may not function properly.
  • Performance Cookies: These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our Sites. They help us determine which pages are the most and least popular and understand how visitors move around the Sites.
  • Advertising Cookies: These cookies allow us and third parties to learn more about you, including your use of our Sites and other websites, and advertise products or services that might interest you.

How to Manage Your Cookie Preferences

You can manage your cookie preferences at any time as follows:
  • Browser Opt-Out: Most browsers allow you to manage your cookies. Your preferences may be browser specific, meaning you must set your preferences separately for each browser on each device. If we detect an opt-out preference signal sent by your browser, we will honor it to the extent described in the “Privacy Rights” section below.

  • Industry Opt-Out Programs:The Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) and the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) maintain websites where people can opt out of targeted advertising from their members. 3. HOW WE USE AND SHARE INFORMATION

Generally

We use personal information for business purposes, such as to:

  • Provide you with access to and use of our Sites and Services;
  • Facilitate or fulfill the information, products, or services you requested;
  • Communicate with you about your products, services, or account (including warranty, safety, and recall information);
  • Market our products to you, including targeted advertising;
  • Market other companies’ products or services to you;
  • Operate information security and anti-fraud programs;
  • Perform business operations, including the improvement of our products, Sites, and Services and to conduct surveys, research, profiling, data analytics, and other normal business activities;
  • Calculate the value of vehicles;
  • Facilitate the relationship you have with your independent Honda or Acura dealer;
  • Respond to governmental and other legal requests or to comply with applicable laws;
  • Protect the safety, property, or rights of ourselves, consumers, or any other third party;
  • Assist law enforcement with locating a stolen or missing vehicle (as further outlined in our Vehicle Data Privacy Notice); and
  • As described to you at the point of collection, with your consent, or as otherwise required or permitted by applicable laws.
We may use artificial intelligence to perform some of these activities.

Testimonials

If you provide a testimonial, we may post it publicly on our Sites or in other advertising materials. By providing a testimonial, you give us permission to use it in any manner and for any purpose, including in marketing and advertising communications.

Service Providers

We may provide your personal information to other businesses to provide services to us or to you on our behalf. Examples include fulfillment and account servicing vendors, marketing and communications vendors, research and development firms, data and business analytics vendors, IT and network administration providers, professional service firms, and other service providers. Each service provider must use reasonable security measures to protect your personal information and cannot use personal information that we provide to them other than to provide services to us.

Third-Party Sharing and Selling

We may disclose your personal information or allow third parties to collect it in limited situations that may qualify as a sale under certain privacy laws. We may also disclose or allow third parties to collect your personal information for targeted advertising purposes, including through cookies or other tracking technologies. In the previous 12 months, we disclosed personal information to the following third parties:

  • Affiliates. We disclosed personal information to American Honda Finance Corporation for marketing and general business purposes.
  • Dealers. We disclosed personal information to authorized Honda dealers and Acura dealers for marketing and general business purposes.
  • Integrated services. We disclosed personal information to companies that provide services integrated within our products, including Sirius XM Radio, for activation, marketing, and general business purposes.
  • General Motors. We disclosed personal information to General Motors and its affiliate, OnStar, in connection with the sale or lease of Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX vehicles. These vehicles use technologies provided by these companies. General Motors and OnStar may use this information for marketing and other purposes outlined in their privacy policies.
  • Advertising, social media, and analytics companies. We disclosed personal information to these third parties or allowed them to collect personal information through our Sites for targeted advertising and analytics purposes.

Partnerships and Co-Branded Websites

We sometimes partner with companies whose products or services may be of interest to you. We strive to be transparent by co-branding jointly-operated Sites. When you visit or use a website that is co-branded or that is a part of a joint promotion involving American Honda and one or more third parties (each a “Co-Branded Party”), you provide your personal information to each Co-Branded Party subject to their own privacy policies. We do not control Co-Branded Parties’ privacy practices. You should read each of their privacy policies posted on or linked from the Co-Branded Sites to determine your rights with respect to their use of your personal information.

Other Transfers

We may also disclose personal information:

  • With businesses controlling, controlled by, or under common control with us;
  • In connection with corporate transactions such as mergers, acquisitions, sales, divestures, restructuring, reorganization, or the transfer of some or all of our assets, and the disclosure is reasonably necessary in connection with the transaction;
  • To comply with the law;
  • To respond to legal requests (including court orders, investigative demands, and subpoenas);
  • To prevent or stop any illegal, unethical, or legally-actionable activity;
  • To protect the safety, property, or rights of ourselves, consumers, or any other third party;
  • For additional purposes with your consent or where required by law.

4. HOW LONG WE RETAIN YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We retain each category of personal information for as long as we have a relationship with you and, if needed for a business purpose, for a period of time after our relationship ends. Relevant factors impacting our retention periods include the business purposes for which we collected the information, our legal, regulatory, tax, and accounting obligations, and applicable statutes of limitations for legal claims to which the information may be relevant. We review our retention policies on an annual basis and routinely purge information when the retention period has been met.

5. SECURITY AND OTHER INFORMATION

Security

We recognize the importance of safeguarding personal information. We use commercially reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, and use. No data transmission over the Internet or other network can be guaranteed to be secure. As a result, while we strive to protect information transmitted on or through our Sites or Services, you do so at your own risk.

The Sites may contain links to third-party websites including social media platforms. Please be aware that if you access these links, you will leave our Sites. We encourage users to read the privacy policies of those websites. We are not responsible for their content, links, or privacy practices.

6. CHILDREN’S PRIVACY

Except as outlined in this section, the Sites and Services are not intended for children under the age of 16 and we do not knowingly collect, share for targeted advertising, or sell personal information from children under the age of 16. If we become aware that we have inadvertently received personal information from a child under the age of 16, other than as outlined in this section, we will delete such information from our records.

We may collect limited personal information about children at least 13 years of age but not yet 16 years of age through products or Services suitable for children of this age group and from Sites that directly support such products or Services. We sell or share (for targeted advertising purposes) personal information about children at least 13 but not yet 16 years of age only with such consumers’ consent.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 years of age.

7. PRIVACY RIGHTS

If you are a resident of the United States, you have additional rights to access and control your personal information. Subject to applicable exemptions, privacy rights include the following:

  • Right to Opt-Out from the Sale or Sharing of Personal Information. You may direct us not to sell or share (for targeted advertising purposes) your personal information to third parties.
  • Right to Know and Access. You may request what personal information we collected about you (including the categories or specific pieces of personal information), the categories of sources from which we collected your information, the business or commercial purpose(s) for collecting it, and the categories and names of third parties to whom we sold or disclosed personal information. We will provide a copy of the specific personal information we maintain about you in a portable and, if technically feasible, readily-usable format.
  • Right to Delete. You may request that we delete information we collected about you.
  • Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information. You may request that we use your sensitive personal information for limited purposes such as to provide the goods and services you requested, prevent fraud, or verify or maintain the quality or safety of goods or services we provide. Other states may allow you to revoke consent you previously provided to process sensitive personal information. The definition of sensitive personal information varies by state.
  • Right to Opt-Out of Automated Decision-Making and Profiling. You may opt-out of profiling and automated decision-making technologies that produce legal or other similarly significant effects. Although we do not currently conduct such activities, you may opt-out now to prevent future processing activities.
  • Right to correct. You may request that we correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you. If you only wish to update your contact information or other personal information rather than disputing its accuracy, please make the changes directly in your account or contact us using the information below.
  • Right to appeal. You may appeal our decision with respect to a previously-submitted privacy request.

Certain Sites also recognize and process Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. When these Sites receive a GPC signal, we treat it as a request to opt-out of the sale or sharing (for targeted advertising purposes) of that user's personal information collected while the signal is present. If we can reasonably associate the signal with an identifiable consumer, we also treat it as a request to opt-out of offline disclosures that qualify as sales or sharing for targeted advertising purposes.

Identity Verification

Privacy laws require us to verify your identity before fulfilling certain types of privacy requests. For these requests, we request personal information to match against the information we have on file and may take additional steps to verify your identity. Please respond promptly to any verification attempts so we can fulfill your privacy request.

Authorized Agent

If you are an authorized agent submitting a request on behalf of another person, you must provide a copy of a lawful power of attorney or written authorization from the consumer. If you make a request as an authorized agent, you may receive additional instructions. Depending on the type of request, we may contact you or the consumer on whose behalf you claim to act to verify your authorization or the consumer’s identity.

Non-Discrimination Notice

We will not discriminate against any individual for exercising their privacy rights under law or this Privacy Notice.

Additional California Disclosures

Do Not Track is a preference setting that causes a web browser to broadcast a signal to websites requesting that a user’s activity not be tracked. Currently, our Sites and Services do not respond to “do not track” signals. See our Cookie Section for more information on how you can manage tracking and cookie preferences.

California Civil Code Section 1798.83, known as the “Shine The Light” law, allows California residents to opt-out of having their personal information shared with third parties for direct marketing purposes. To exercise your rights under this law, please submit a request to opt-out of sales and sharing using the methods described above

8. CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY NOTICE

This Privacy Notice is subject to change; therefore, we encourage you to review it frequently for any revisions or amendments. When we make material changes to the Notice, we will take reasonable steps to notify consumers (e.g., sending email notifications). Privacy Notice changes we post on this Site are effective immediately. You accept the changes by continuing to use our Sites or Services. If we determine that a change to this Privacy Notice will result in using previously- acquired personal information in a materially new way, we will provide you notice and take any other actions required by applicable law.
