FCX Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle
The Dream: Environmentally Responsible Mobility
FCX CLARITY - The Zero-Emission Sedan of the Future. A Reality Today.
When our engineers first began to dream about creating a hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle in 1986, many scientists agreed that the biggest environmental issue we faced was the quality of the air. Our engineers envisioned a world where children playing under blue skies was a given, not a goal. They knew that it would take a whole new type of automobile--and a whole new level of supportive infrastructure--to accomplish such a vision.
A zero emissions car was the noblest of goals and, in recent years, this dream has taken on even greater importance as new areas of environmental concern have emerged, such as the importance of reducing our dependence on non-renewable energy sources like oil. But perhaps the most significant challenge we face today is reducing CO2 emissions, which scientists say are a major contributor to global climate change.
As a mobility company producing gasoline-powered products, we believe we have a responsibility to reduce CO2 and other harmful emissions from our products and from the operations that build them.
Yes, the focus of environmental concern may have shifted. But the dream remains the same: to protect and conserve our natural environment for the benefit of future generations.
Here's what's remarkable about the FCX Clarity: it produces zero smog-forming emissions, just water.
The Ultimate in Clean Commuting-Made Real
The FCX Clarity is ready to hit the road and start making a difference in 2008. The design and platform were developed from the ground up specifically for the FCX Clarity - and it will have the same crash-safety technology one would expect in a Honda, along with additional safety precautions specific to a fuel cell vehicle. This is our second-generation FCX so we had quite a bit of experience to draw upon.
Just like the earlier FCX fuel cell vehicles, the Clarity is powered by an electric motor, which draws its energy from a unique Honda-developed fuel cell stack that is able to produce electricity from compressed hydrogen stored on board the vehicle. But our next-generation FCX is different. Utilizing Honda's advanced new V-Flow stack, the compact fuel cell system allows for more room inside the vehicle, increased comfort and enhanced driving appeal. A sleek and stylish four-passenger sedan that is designed to appeal to more than just your environmental sensibilities. Environmental responsibility has never looked so good, or offered so much driving fun.
Today's Dream
We are convinced of the fuel cell vehicle's potential to become the ultimate clean power source for the next generation. And we are proud to make this dream a reality by making a limited number of FCX Clarity models available for lease to qualified Southern California customers in mid-2008. Once convenient fueling options become more widely available, Honda will expand the availability of the FCX Clarity.
To this end, Honda engineers are actively working to develop a compact and efficient Home Energy Station that will serve as a power source for both the fuel cell vehicle and the home. We took a total approach to our environmental goals with the intent to find a complete solution for clean, renewable energy. By creating one efficient home energy system that heats water for the home, produces hydrogen fuel for a fuel cell vehicle, and sources the electricity to power everyday appliances, Honda has set the stage for the realization of a true future society.
The challenges are real, but Honda has a vision, a determination and a legacy of achieving our goals. Our engineers are focused, with great optimism for the future, because the FCX Clarity has shown that momentous dreams can have momentous results.
