The Dream: Efficiently Gather Energy from the Sun

Honda is a leader in developing innovative new approaches to creating sustainable energy, including solar cells that convert energy from the sun into electricity.

It's a technology whose time has come - thanks to next-generation solar cells developed by Honda that use thin film made from a compound of copper, indium, gallium and selenium (CIGS).

So we started a whole new company, Honda Soltec Co., Ltd., headquartered in Kumamoto, Japan, to produce and market the next-generation thin film solar cells developed by Honda.

Honda's next-generation thin film solar cells achieve approximately a 50 percent reduction in the amount of energy consumed during the manufacturing process. This makes the new solar cell more environmentally responsible by reducing the amount of CO2 generated even from the production stage.

These solar cells are already mounted on Honda's experimental Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) in Torrance, California. The result is increased efficiency in producing hydrogen using renewable solar energy. And when combined with Honda's world-leading FCX, a fuel cell vehicle whose only by-product is water, these thin film solar cells help create the ultimate solution for cleaner mobility.

We're fully committed to bringing Honda solar cell technology to the mainstream through innovative creations like our HRS. It's a commitment of vital importance if we are to realize our ultimate dream: a world powered by clean and sustainable energy; and a world of blue skies for our children.
