Honda has a long history of environmental leadership as the first automaker to meet virtually every low-emission vehicle requirement over the last 50 years of the internal combustion engine era. Now, as we move toward the electrified future, Honda associates are creating innovative products and solutions to help minimize our environmental impact.
Decarbonization
Honda is working to decarbonize our products and operations. We are targeting increased sales of electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles* in our automobile business in North America and other major global markets. Our efforts focus on decarbonization across every part of our operations, including offices, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities. We are also working with our suppliers and dealers to reduce and eliminate carbon emissions.
Clean Energy
Our goal for clean energy is to use 100% sustainable and/or carbon-free energy sources. We’re already introducing energy-saving initiatives, shifting to low-carbon energy sources, and covering more than 80% of the electricity used in our North American manufacturing operations through long-term virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) for renewable wind and solar power. We’re also working to achieve our goal by expanding the use of renewable energy at our facilities as well as through additional VPPAs.
Resource Circulation
Our vision for the future includes using 100% sustainable materials, with a strong focus on maximizing the use of recycled materials in our products. We aim to recapture valuable materials in our products at the end of their life, enabling us to circulate the materials back into the supply stream. This applies to the batteries in our hybrid electric and fully electric vehicles as well. Honda intends to reuse finite materials to achieve a consistent, closed-loop supply of recycled nickel, cobalt, and lithium.
Honda associates are also implementing innovative solutions to reduce or eliminate waste at our manufacturing and R&D operations. For example, the uniforms worn by associates at our U.S. manufacturing and R&D facilities are transformed into sound-absorbing insulation for use in Honda and Acura automobiles, diverting approximately 45,000 pounds of uniforms from landfills each month.
