Triple Action to Zero

Honda has a long history of environmental leadership as the first automaker to meet virtually every low-emission vehicle requirement over the last 50 years of the internal combustion engine era. Now, as society moves toward the electrified future, Honda associates are creating innovative products and solutions to help achieve our global goal of zero environmental impact through our Triple Action to Zero approach.

Honda Triple Action to Zero. Carbon Neutrality, Clean Energy and Resource Circulation.

Carbon Neutrality

Honda is working to decarbonize its operations — from our offices and warehouses to our manufacturing facilities. We’re also working with our suppliers and dealers to reduce and eliminate carbon emissions. As part of our mission to become carbon neutral, we are targeting sales of 100% zero-emission vehicles in our automobile business in North America and other major global markets by 2040. This includes battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.*

Clean Energy

Our goal for clean energy is to use 100% sustainable and/or carbon-free energy sources. We’re already introducing energy-saving initiatives, shifting to low-carbon energy sources, and offsetting more than 60% of the electricity used in our North American manufacturing operations through long-term virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) for renewable wind and solar power. We’re also working to achieve our goal by expanding the use of renewable energy at our facilities as well as through additional VPPAs.

Resource Circulation

Our goal is to use 100% sustainable materials by recapturing our products at the end of life, enabling us to keep our products out of landfills and make new Hondas out of old Hondas. This applies to the batteries in our electric vehicles as well. Honda intends to reuse finite materials to achieve a consistent, closed-loop supply of recycled nickel, cobalt, and lithium.

Honda associates are also implementing innovative solutions to reduce or eliminate waste at our manufacturing and R&D operations. For example, the uniforms worn by associates at our U.S. manufacturing and R&D facilities are transformed into sound-absorbing insulation for use in Honda and Acura automobiles, diverting approximately 45,000 pounds of uniforms from landfills each month.
